Impressionism, which has been described as the root of Modernism. This movement revolted against the traditional and established taste of 'Illusionist Painting'. The Italian Renaissance dominated painting up to this turning point, the rebels of Impressionism offered a completely new way of painting and expression, focusing more on the experience of nature and life as it happens.
Impressionism was a term invented to ridicule the apparently haphazard and half-finished character of their 'snapshots' in painting.
The artists at the forefront of Impression sought to reflect fleeting moments, changing moments and represent human perception and experience. Impressionism is characterised by open and expressive brushmarks, a focus on changing light, ordinary subject matter and inclusion of movement.
